A finder magnification of 0.8 sounds good! A pity that the finder cannot be moved upward (if you work close to the ground in bright light). The layout of the knobs, buttons and dials looks familiar to me - the Z cameras are Nikons! And it's new for Nikon that they look identical (e.g. Nikon says, the VR works even with older F-mount lenses on the adapter.

In my opinion, the highlight of the new cameras is the built-in VR system. Due to the X-Sync speed of 1/200sec the shutter doesn't seem to be one of the fastest of its kind. The frame rate of 12fps sounds good, but the question is, how much will it be with 14-bit raws and with continuous AF. I can't find any information about the buffer sizes. Well, I still miss some details about how fast it is. 24MP is enough, the Z6 costs much less and it is faster. Otherwise, the Z6 is the better buy in my eyes. Thus, the Z6 has bigger sensors or the Z7 has a denser sensor arrangement. But the Z6 "only" has 273 autofocus points while the Z7 has 493. The AF sensors of both, the Z6 and the Z7, cover about 90% of the frame. The silly teasers are over: Nikon has announced the Z systemAugust 23, 2018 from Steve Perry!īut the D6 also shows that we can no longer expect these two things in a Nikon DSLR: Therefore I am looking forward to the practical reports about the AF system, e.g. Small improvements that seem insignificant to photographers of other genres may be crucial for wildlife photographers (and probably also for sports photographers) in certain situations. I still see an advantage for the DSLR in wildlife photography.

Probably this is the last professional DSLR from Nikon. On the other hand, the differences between Nikon's professional DSLRs have become smaller from generation to generation. Unfortunately, there is nothing new in the most important connection of a system camera - Nikon has not fulfilled the hope of improved compatibility with the F-Mount that came with the FTZ2. The remote control socket and viewfinder eyepiece also promise extensive backwards compatibility.

The fact that I can continue to use the batteries and XQD cards from the D4 is pleasing. Will it even exist? Will it be a slow camera with around 100MP? Will it be a semi-professional, very fast 24MP camera? Or will we get a Z80 with a 45MP sensor instead or in addition? The Z9 now offers both - high speed and a 45MP sensor. With the D series, there was the fast D4 and D5 with 16MP and 20MP sensors respectively, and below that a slower, semi-professional camera with a high-resolution sensor (D8x0). The model logic of the Z system remains unclear to me. Or the exact embedding of the animal eye AF in the handling of the AF system. One such detail is, for example, the logic of the aperture control at 20 frames per second. Moreover, what I have seen in various videos of the animal eye AF of the Z9 is very promising!īut first we have to wait for the exact data and many details of the implementation. The purely electronic shutter is highly interesting, especially for wildlife! (with the D4 in continuous shooting mode, you can easily chase away one or two shy animal). With the Z9, Nikon has obviously made a great technological leap forward. Even though it is a very expensive camera, I will seriously consider buying one. The mirrorless Z9 has the potential to replace both of them while significantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Wildlife photography is one of the remaining areas of use for DSLRs for me.
